Overview

Café Batavia stands as a timeless gem nestled in the heart of Jakarta’s historic Old Town. Situated on Jl. Pintu Besar Utara No.14, this restaurant masterfully combines colonial architecture with a welcoming, cozy ambiance that truly invites you to linger. The two-floor layout is adorned with rich photographs and paintings, which deepen the sense of history and transport visitors back to the Dutch East Indies era while offering modern comfort and excellent air conditioning.

The menu is a thoughtful blend of Indonesian classics and unique specialties such as Bitterballen, a Dutch-influenced crispy snack, and Soto Betawi, a hearty Jakarta-style beef soup. Other highlights include the ever-popular Poffertjes—fluffy mini pancakes—and traditional dishes like Lontong Medan, Nasi Campur Meener, and the flavorful Nasi Goreng Roa. For refreshing options, the Es Campur Batavia and Iced Pandan Latte stand out, perfect to balance the tropical heat.

Café Batavia caters to a broad audience: tourists eager to experience a slice of Jakarta’s colonial past, locals looking for an elevated dining experience, and anyone who appreciates a blend of history and culinary art. The staff consistently receive praise for their politeness and attentiveness, with many guests noting their English proficiency and helpful food recommendations that elevate the overall dining experience.

While some visitors have mentioned occasional delays in service and noted that the bathrooms could meet higher cleanliness standards, these minor issues do little to detract from the overall charm and quality of the place. Live music adds a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, and the option to request songs gives the dining experience an engaging personal touch.

Ultimately, Café Batavia offers more than just a meal—it provides a cultural immersion. Whether you come for lunch or dinner, it’s a place where history, hospitality, and flavor come together seamlessly. For those visiting Jakarta’s Old Town, it remains a must-visit spot, delivering a memorable taste of the past with a modern flair.

I have been to the Cafe Batavia for twice. It is the most beautiful cafe in North Jakarta!! It has 2 floors and there are tons of photos and paintings inside, making the space very cozy. I recommend you stay here for a lunch or dinner. The price is also affordable for foreigners

Historical colonial style architecture. A must if you’re visiting Old Town Jakarta. Service was rather slow (we ordered one chicken and it took 30 minutes!) good cosy areas, well air-conditioned.

A beautiful historical restaurant, which therefore attracts a lot of tourists. This is also reflected in the prices. The food tastes good. The service was excellent and fast. The only disappointment was the bathroom cleanliness, which fell short of what you'd expect from such a renowned restaurant.

Amazing experience. Tasty food. Excellent service. My server spoke great English and gave really good recommendations of food and drink selection. I went there Saturday night and had almost no one in the restaurant. Everyone was nice and polite. Great live music with free one song request for the band. I will definitely come back again next time I'm in Jakarta. Highly recommend!

I went here with my friends for the first time in my 30 years of life as an Indonesian. The vibe is odd in some way, I feel like I was a “kompeni” back in the colonial times, but i suppose it was their concept. Although I must say the atmosphere was great. The service was incredible, very polite, down to earth staff. Typical Indonesian smile all the time service. I love that about this place. Of course its somewhat pricey but with the portions and the service that you get, totally worth the price. Overall i would definitely comeback.

Great experience overall! The historic ambiance is charming, and the staff are friendly and speak English well. Loved every single dish we ordered—delicious and well-presented. Only downside: the ice cream portion was huge for just two people. Still, highly recommended!

This place is a bit a high-end café where they expect you to spend. The more you spend, the better location you will be offered for seating. However, all staff are friendly, speak good English n good to enjoy the atmosphere where you can learn the colonial history of this building. The coffee itself was just fine, not as wow as I'd expected for.

A delightful dining experience! The restaurant offers a cosy and inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxing meal. The service was attentive and warm throughout our visit. While the prices are on the higher side, the food was absolutely delicious and worth every bite. A great spot for those who value quality and a comfortable setting.
